Specialty Water Filter Media

H2K Technologies supplies custom water filtration solutions to treat a wide variety of water contaminants.

Water quality can be affected by a wide range of contaminants, ranging from undesired nuisances to dangerous toxic chemicals. Selecting the right specialty treatment media is critical to water treatment when dealing with PFOS, oil & grease, dissolved metals, volatile organic compounds, and many other contaminants. H2K Technologies constructs treatment systems to handle these contaminants and we use a wide variety of media to treat water processes. Our experienced engineering team will design custom packaged media filter solution for your water process.

Activated Carbon Treatment

Activated carbon is a powerful filtration media capable of removing harmful chemicals from contaminated water and air. Granular activated carbon is commonly manufacturer from coal & coconut and utilizes a porous surface to capture volatile organic compounds. Contaminants stick to the surface of these pores as water flows through the carbon media bed and are removed from the process. Activated carbon can treat many contaminants including PFAS/PFOS, chlorinated solvents, fuel oil, gasoline & diesel range organics, PCBs, and many more harmful industrial chemicals. H2K Technologies carbon media options include virgin-grade, reactivated, catalytic, and reagglomerated carbon.

Manganese Dioxide Filter Media

Iron and manganese removal from water is most commonly accomplished with manganese dioxide filter media such as Greensand, Katalox, Pyrolox, and others. The manganese dioxide media is a powerful catalyst which oxidizes dissolved manganese & iron to form precipitated solids which are captured in the media bed. Greensand filter media needs to be routinely regenerated to maintain its oxidizing potential. Potassium permanganate and sodium hypochlorite injection is the most common way to keep a manganese dioxide media filter operating with peak performance.

Cartridge & Bag Filters for Oil Removal

Emulsified oil & grease can cause severe problems with industrial water systems. While H2K Technologies’ industrial oil/water separator is a great option for free-phase oil removal, emulsified products often require a specialty filter solution. We provide engineered oil-removal cartridge filters and bag filters for difficult emulsified oil and grease. These oleophilic filters are designed to attract all hydrocarbons from water regardless of droplet size. H2K Tech oil removal cartridges are capable of 99.9% emulsified oil capture and oil instantly binds to the cartridge with a single pass. Oleophilic cartridges and bags are designed to fit in standard filter housings, which also allows for easy retrofit into existing systems.

When your project requires removing free-phase oils and grease, our LLS-Series coalescing oil-water separator is a great solution.

Organoclay Filter Media

Organoclay is a granular filter media capable of removing emulsified oils from water. Organoclay media is charged with an oleophilic coating which allows it to capture oils out of passing water. Media beds have an oil loading capacity in every filter, which is up to 70% of the media weight. This high loading capacity allows extended runtime between filter changeouts. Treated pollutants also include ammonia, magnesium, calcium, and other anions/cations. Organoclay is commonly offered with various particle sizes and as blends with other filter media like activated carbon.

Titanium Dioxide Filter Media

Heavy metals removal from water is critical in many industrial waste water processes. Titanium Dioxide filter media is designed to remove a wide range of heavy metals including Arsenic, Lead, Cadmium, Copper, Selenium, and Zinc. Titanium dioxide media provide a high filter capacity and is capable of effective treatment with short contact times. A residence time of 1-3 minutes is typical for TiO2 filters which allows the use of smaller filters to save space in a packed water treatment facility. Titanium dioxide media is capable arsenic removal from water without a need for chemical injection or media regeneration which creates a heavy metals treatment system which is easy to operate.

Granular Ferric Hydroxide Media

Iron hydroxide is a powerful media capable of treating water pollution like hydrogen sulfide, arsenic, phosphates, copper, and many other contaminants. Granular ferric hydroxide captures these and other ions on the media surface. Filtration with ferric hydroxide doesn’t require addition of any chemicals, but oxidant dosing can enhance treatment. Granular ferric hydroxide is more commonly used in water treatment, but also is capable of removing H2S and other contaminants from an air process.

Multi-media Filters

Suspended solids filtration from water is one of the most common requirements for industrial water treatment. Critical process equipment can be damaged by small particles, so solids removal from process water is a necessary step in many water processes. Packaged sand filter systems are a strong option to remove suspended solids from process water. Sand/multi-media filters utilize layers of sand and gravel to capture solids from process water. Standard filters are capable of capturing solids as small as 10-25 micron; filtration down to 5 micron particle size is possible with specialty filter media.

Ion Exchange Resins

Ion exchange (IX) resins are a family of filter media which utilize spherical bead media charged as cationic and anionic resins. These positively charged (cationic) and negatively charged (anionic) media react with ions in water to remove them from the process. Common ions capable of treatment with IX resin include PFOS, PFOA, lead, copper, zinc, uranium, calcium/hardness and many more. You may even be familiar with ion exchange resins operating in your water softener at home. Ion exchange resins specialize in selective component capture from water. The range of base cation and anion formulas allow us to tailor water treatment goals and remove only desired compounds with selected resins. Selective ion exchange helps conserve treatment capacity in other parts of a water treatment system by capturing compounds that would quickly consume other media.
